The Ohio Heartland Sheep Improvement Association is sponsoring a lambing/kidding school and FAMACHA workshop on Saturday, May 17, 2008. The school will be held at the OARDC Sheep Center, 5651 Fredericksburg Road in Wooster from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those who raise either sheep or goats will benefit from attending as issues common to both species will be presented.
The morning session will start with Dr. William Shulaw, OSU Extension Sheep Specialist, conducting a FAMACHA workshop followed by a hands-on presentation in the barn. FAMACHA is a method of classifying sheep or goats according to levels of parasite induced anemia based on the color of the inner eye lid. It is a valuable tool in monitoring the affects of parasites in a flock and identifying the animals that need wormed. Deworming only the ones that need it (selective deworming) helps to slow the development of parasites resistant to dewormers. In the afternoon Dr. Eric Shaver, veterinarian with the Holmes County Veterinary Clinic, will oversee the lambing/kidding school which will cover topics such as condition close to birth, lamb/kid survival, and raising orphans. The barn session will involve lambing/kidding practices, docking, inverted eyelids, etc. Participants should come dressed to work. The OARDC will be late spring lambing at this time and participants will be able to compare winter lambing in the barn to spring lambing on pasture. Doug Clevenger, manager of the OARDC Sheep Facility and Dr. Terry Kline, local veterinarian, will also contribute to the program.
Cost of the course is $25 per person and $15 per additional family member. FAMACHA cards will be available for an additional $10 for those desiring them. Lunch is included in the cost. Please call OHSIA at 419-869-7353 or email skg2ewe@verizon.net for more information and registration. Pre-registration is not required but would be appreciated in order to have an accurate lunch count.
